Rest In Peace - Remember - Alfredo Ormando
On January 13, 1998, Alfredo Ormando, a 39-year old man from Palermo, Sicily, came to St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City, doused himself with gasoline, set himself on fire, and rushed towards the entrance to the basilica. Before he could reach the doors of the basilica, the police stopped him and extinguished the flames.
Two letters found in the pockets of his coat that he had left nearby said he was protesting society's and his family's failure to understand homosexuals. As he wrote in one of the letters, "It's not my fault that I am gay."
